About Backyard Freedom Lab
Why DIY — by DIY, for DIY
Somewhere along the way, we traded competence for convenience. We outsourced our food to supply chains we've never seen, our water to pipes we don't control, our repairs to call centers, and our confidence to subscription services. It works — right up until the day it doesn't. A storm, a layoff, a price hike, a broken part with a six-week lead time. That's the day you find out what you actually know how to do.
Backyard Freedom Lab exists for that day — and for every ordinary day before it. We believe self-reliance isn't a bunker mentality; it's a skill stack. Growing some of your own food. Storing water. Fixing instead of replacing. Producing a little of your own power. Every project you build with your own hands pays two dividends: the thing itself, and the person you become while building it.
This site is made the way its readers live: hands-on. We research the products the self-reliance market pushes — the guides, the blueprints, the systems — and we tell you plainly which ones deliver, which ones oversell, and who should keep their money. By DIY people, for DIY people. No hype survives contact with a workbench.
Who writes this
Backyard Freedom Lab is written by Sam — a researcher and lifelong DIYer with one obsession: practical self-reliance without the hype. Sam writes under a pen name so the work has to stand on its own — every claim in our reviews is attributed to a verifiable source, not to a personality.
How we work
Our reviews are research-based. We verify author backgrounds, check publisher and retail listings, read independent community feedback, and — where products make physical claims — compare them against published data. When we haven't personally used a product, the review says so. When a product is oversold, we say that too, and every review names who should not buy. The full methodology is on our how we review page.
How the site makes money
Plainly: affiliate commissions. When you buy a product through links on this site, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That funding model is exactly why our reviews score honestly and answer the "is it a scam?" questions directly — the site only works if you can trust it. Full details in our affiliate disclosure.
